REASSEMBLY or FUEL TANK UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , then do the repair  
verification .  
REPAIR VERIFICATION

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).  
2. Reset the PCM with the HDS See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or HOW  
TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .  
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
3. DO THE PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE .  
4. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

YES : Go to the indicated DTC's Troubleshooting.  
NO : Troubleshooting is complete.

1. Problem verification:

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).  
ο‚‘
2. Clear the DTC with the HDS See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or  
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .  
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
3. Wait 5 seconds.  
4. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

P0462 FUEL LEVEL SENSOR (FUEL GAUGE  
SENDING UNIT) CIRCUIT LOW VOLTAGE  
Is DTC P0462 indicated?  
YES : The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.  
NO : Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at  
the gauge control module and the fuel gauge sending unit.  
2. Fuel gauge sending unit check:

ο‚‘
1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).  
2. Remove the access panel from the floor.  
3. Disconnect the following connector. Fuel tank unit 4P connector  
4. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).  
5. Wait 5 seconds.  
6. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

VOLTAGE  
Is DTC P0463 indicated?  
YES : Replace the fuel gauge sending unit See FUEL TANK UNIT DISASSEMBLY AND  
REASSEMBLY or FUEL TANK UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , then do the repair  
verification .  
NO : The fuel gauge sending unit is OK. Go to step 3.  
3. Determine possible failure area (FUEL GAGE+ line, others):  
ο‚‘
1. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.  
Test condition IG ON (II)  
Fuel tank unit 4P connector: disconnected  
Test circuit FUEL GAGE+  
Test point 1 Fuel tank unit 4P connector No. 2 (YEL)  
Test point 2 Body ground

Is there battery voltage?  
YES : Go to step 5.  
NO : Go to step 4.  
4. Shorted wire check (FUEL GAGE+ line):  
ο‚‘
1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).  
ο‚‘
2. Remove the gauge control module See GAUGE CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL AND  
INSTALLATION or Rewriting the ODO Data and Transferring the Maintenance Minderβ„’ Data  
to a New Gauge Control Module.  
ο‚‘
3. Disconnect the following connector.  
Gauge control module 32P connector  
4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.  
Test condition IG LOCK (0)  
ο‚‘
Fuel tank unit 4P connector: disconnected  
Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected  
Test circuit FUEL GAGE+  
Test point 1 Fuel tank unit 4P connector No. 2 (YEL)  
Test point 2 Body ground

Is there continuity?  
YES : Repair a short in the FUEL GAGE+ wire between the gauge control module and the fuel tank unit,  
then do the repair verification .  
NO : The FUEL GAGE+ wire is OK. Replace the gauge control module See GAUGE CONTROL  
MODULE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or Rewriting the ODO Data and Transferring the  
Maintenance Minderβ„’ Data to a New Gauge Control Module, then do the repair verification .  
5. Gauge control module check:  
ο‚‘
1. Reconnect the following connector.  
Gauge control module 32P connector  
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
2. Remove the fuel tank unit See FUEL TANK UNIT DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY or  
FUEL TANK UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .  
3. Connect the following connector.  
Fuel tank unit 4P connector  
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
4. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).  
5. Clear the DTC with the HDS See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or  
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .  
ο‚‘
6. Set the float (A) to the E position.

7. Check the fuel gauge.  
Does the gauge move to the empty position?  
YES : The gauge control module is OK. Update the PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND  
INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-  
good PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE , then do the repair  
verification .  
NO : Replace the gauge control module See GAUGE CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL AND  
INSTALLATION or Rewriting the ODO Data and Transferring the Maintenance Minderβ„’ Data to a  
New Gauge Control Module, then do the repair verification .

1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).  
2. Reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.  
3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).  
4. Reset the PCM with the HDS See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or HOW  
TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .

5. DO THE PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE .  
6. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P0462 indicated?  
YES : Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the gauge control module and the fuel gauge sending  
unit. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND  
INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE , then recheck. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1.  
NO : Troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM See PCM  
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE . If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are  
indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.  
DTC P0463: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR (FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT) CIRCUIT

Test point 2 Fuel tank unit 4P connector No. 4 (PUR)

Is there battery voltage?  
YES : Go to step 5.  
NO : Go to step 3.  
3. Open wire check (FUEL GAGE- line):

1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

2. Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.  
Terminal A Fuel tank unit 4P connector No. 4 (PUR)

3. Remove the gauge control module See Rewriting the ODO Data and Transferring the  
Maintenance Minderβ„’ Data to a New Gauge Control Module or GAUGE CONTROL MODULE  
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .  
4. Disconnect the following connector.  
Gauge control module 32P connector  
ο‚‘
5. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.  
Test condition IG LOCK (0)  
Fuel tank unit 4P connector: disconnected  
Fuel tank unit 4P connector No. 4: jumped to body ground  
Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected  
Test circuit FUEL GAGE-  
Test point 1 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 21 (BLK)  
Test point 2 Body ground

Is there continuity?  
YES : The FUEL GAGE- wire is OK. Go to step 4.  
NO : Repair an open in the FUEL GAGE- wire between the gauge control module and the fuel tank unit,  
then do the repair verification .  
4. Open wire check (FUEL GAGE+ line):

1. Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.  
Terminal A Fuel tank unit 4P connector No. 2 (YEL)  
Terminal B Body ground

2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.  
Test condition IG LOCK (0)  
Fuel tank unit 4P connector: disconnected  
Fuel tank unit 4P connector No. 2: jumped to body ground  
Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected  
Test circuit FUEL GAGE+  
Test point 1 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 22 (BLU)

Is there continuity?  
YES : The FUEL GAGE+ wire is OK. Go to step 5.  
NO : Repair an open in the FUEL GAGE+ wire between the gauge control module and the fuel tank unit,  
then do the repair verification .  
5. Fuel gauge sending unit performance check:

ο‚‘
1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).  
2. Remove the jumper wire from the fuel tank unit 4P connector.  
3. Remove the fuel tank unit See FUEL TANK UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or  
FUEL TANK UNIT DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY .  
ο‚‘
4. TEST THE FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT .  
Is the fuel gauge sending unit OK?  
YES : The fuel gauge sending unit is OK. Go to step 6.  
NO : Replace the fuel gauge sending unit, then do the repair verification .  
6. Gauge control module check:  
ο‚‘
1. Connect the following connectors.  
Fuel tank unit 4P connector  
Gauge control module 32P connector  
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).  
3. Clear the DTC with the HDS See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or  
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .

4. Set the float (A) to the F position.

5. Check the fuel gauge.  
Does the gauge move to the full position?  
YES : The gauge control module is OK. Update the PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND  
INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-  
good PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE , then do the repair  
verification .  
NO : Replace the gauge control module See GAUGE CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL AND  
INSTALLATION or Rewriting the ODO Data and Transferring the Maintenance Minderβ„’ Data to a  
New Gauge Control Module, then do the repair verification .

Is DTC P0463 indicated?  
YES : Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the gauge control module and the fuel gauge sending  
unit. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND  
INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE , then recheck. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1.  
NO : Troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, REPLACE THE ORIGINAL PCM . If any  
other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.  
DTC P0496: EVAP SYSTEM HIGH PURGE FLOW DETECTED
