PASSED : Troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM See PCM
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE . If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs were
indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
FAILED : Go to step 1 and recheck. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM See PCM
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE , then check the OBD STATUS again.
NOT COMPLETED : Check the OBD STATUS again.

P0011 VTC SYSTEM MALFUNCTION
1. Oil pressure check:
ο‘
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
ο‘
2. Clear the DTC with the HDS See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .
ο‘
ο‘
3. Start the engine.
4. Watch the low oil pressure indicator with the engine running.
Is the low oil pressure indicator on?
YES : CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE , then do the repair verification .
NO : Go to step 2.
2. Problem verification:
ο‘
1. Do the VTC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
Is the result OK?
YES : Go to step 3.
NO : The failure is duplicated. Go to step 5.
3. VTC system check (VTC STATUS check with the HDS):
ο‘
ο‘
1. Test-drive at a steady speed between 19-38 mph (30-60 km/h) for 10 minutes.
2. Check the parameter(s) below with the HDS.

4. VTC system check (OBD STATUS check):

1. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0011 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

Does the HDS indicate FAILED?
YES : Go to step 5.
NO : If the HDS indicates PASSED, intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 1 and recheck.
5. VTC strainer visual check:

1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
2. REMOVE THE AUTO-TENSIONER .
3. Remove the VTC strainer (A), and check it for clogging.

Is the strainer OK?
YES : Go to step 6.
NO : Clean the VTC strainer, REPLACE THE ENGINE OIL FILTER and THE ENGINE OIL , then do
the repair verification .
6. VTC oil control valve operation check:
ο‘
1. TEST THE VTC OIL CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE .
Is the VTC oil control solenoid valve OK?
YES : Go to step 7.
NO : REPLACE THE VTC OIL CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE , then do the repair verification .
7. Camshaft timing check:
ο‘
1. Check the camshaft timing See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT or VALVE, SPRING,
AND VALVE SEAL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Is the camshaft timing OK?
YES : Go to step 8.
NO : Reset the camshaft timing See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT or VALVE, SPRING,
AND VALVE SEAL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , then do the repair verification .
8. Cam chain check:
ο‘
1. CHECK FOR DAMAGE OR STRETCH AT THE CAM CHAIN .
Is the cam chain damaged or stretched?
YES : REPLACE THE CAM CHAIN AND THE AUTO-TENSIONER , then do the repair
verification .
NO : Go to step 9.
9. VTC actuator check:
ο‘
1. INSPECT THE VTC ACTUATOR .
Is the VTC actuator OK?
YES : Check the VTC system oil passages between VTC strainer and the VTC actuator in the cylinder
block and the cylinder head, and clean them if needed, then do the repair verification .
NO : REPLACE THE VTC ACTUATOR , then do the repair verification .
REPAIR VERIFICATION (OBD STATUS CHECK)

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Reset the PCM with the HDS See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or HOW
TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .

3. DO THE PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE .
ο‘
4. Do the CKP pattern clear/CKP pattern learn procedure See HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE
A/T SYSTEM or HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .

5. Do the VTC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
6. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0011 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
