NOTE:

Do not use this troubleshooting procedure if the A/C compressor is
inoperative. Refer to the symptom troubleshooting index.


If A/C refrigerant pressure is abnormal, the radiator and A/C condenser
fans are controlled based only on engine coolant temperature.
Before doing symptom troubleshooting, check for PGM-FI DTCs See HOW
TO TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE
FUEL AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .
1. Fuse check:
ο‚‘
1. Check the following fuses.

Fuse No. A8 (7.5 A)
Location Under-hood fuse/relay box
Are the fuses OK?
YES : Go to step 2.
NO : Replace the fuse(s), and recheck. If the fuse(s) blow again, check for a short in the No. A2-10 (20
A) fuse and/or the No. A8 (7.5 A) fuse circuit(s).
2. A/C condenser fan relay check:
ο‚‘
1. Remove the A/C condenser fan relay from the under-hood fuse/relay box, and TEST IT .
Is the relay OK?
YES : Go to step 3.
NO : Replace the A/C condenser fan relay.
3. Open wire check (+B SUB FAN line):
ο‚‘
1. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition IG LOCK (0)
A/C condenser fan relay: disconnected
Test circuit +B SUB FAN
Test point 1 A/C condenser fan relay 4P socket No. 1
Test point 2 Body ground

Is there battery voltage?
YES : The +B SUB FAN wire is OK. Go to step 4.
NO : An open in the +B SUB FAN wire. REPLACE THE UNDER-HOOD FUSE/RELAY BOX .
4. SUB FAN MOTOR line check:
ο‚‘
1. Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.
Terminal A A/C condenser fan relay 4P socket No. 1
Terminal B A/C condenser fan relay 4P socket No. 2 (YEL)

Does the A/C condenser fan run on high?
YES : The SUB FAN MOTOR wire is OK. Go to step 5.
NO : Repair an open in the wire between the A/C condenser fan relay and the A/C condenser fan motor.
5. A/C condenser fan relay coil side power circuit check:
ο‚‘
1. Disconnect the jumper wire.
ο‚‘
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
ο‚‘
3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition IG ON (II)
A/C condenser fan relay: disconnected
Test circuit SUB FAN DIODE-
Test point 1 A/C condenser fan relay 4P socket No. 3 (WHT)
Test point 2 Body ground

Is there battery voltage?
YES : The No. A8 (7.5 A) fuse circuit wire is OK. Go to step 6.
NO : Go to step 7.
6. Open wire check (FAN HI SIGNAL line):
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
2. Reinstall the A/C condenser fan relay.
3. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
NOTE:
This step must be done to protect the PCM from damage.
ο‚‘
ο‚‘
4. Disconnect the following connector.
PCM connector A (49P)
5. Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.
Terminal A PCM connector A (49P) No. 16 (GRY)
Terminal B Body ground
Terminal A PCM connector A (49P) No. 20 (WHT)
Terminal B Body ground

ο‚‘
6. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
Does the A/C condenser fan run on high?
YES : Update the PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE if it does
not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND
INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE , and recheck.
NO : Repair an open in the wire between the A/C condenser fan relay and the PCM.
7. A/C diode A check:
ο‚‘
1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
ο‚‘
2. Using the diode setting on a DVOM, check for current flow in both directions between A/C
diode A terminals No. 1 and No. 2.
Fig. 35: Identifying A/C Diode A

Is there current flow in only one direction?
YES : An open in No. A8 (7.5 A) fuse circuit wire. REPLACE THE UNDER-HOOD FUSE/RELAY
BOX .
NO : Replace A/C diode A.
A/C DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS
When a customer presents A/C concern, do the following procedure to identify the cause of the problem.
1. Confirm the type of concern.


If a customer presents about A/C noise problem, do the A/C System Noise Check .
If a customer presents about A/C performance problem, go to step 2.
2. Do the A/C System Inspection and repair any problems. If no problems are found, then go to step 3.
3. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system See A/C REFRIGERANT RECOVERY , A/C
SYSTEM CHARGING or A/C System Evacuation and measure the refrigerant charge from the A/C
system using a recovery/recycling/charging station that meets SAE J2788 standards.

If the refrigerant charge is within specifications, evacuate See A/C REFRIGERANT
RECOVERY , A/C SYSTEM CHARGING or A/C System Evacuation and recharge the
system See A/C REFRIGERANT RECOVERY , A/C SYSTEM CHARGING or A/C System
Evacuation . Then go to step 4.


If the refrigerant charge is significantly under specifications, then go to step 5.
If the refrigerant charge is significantly over specifications, evacuate See A/C REFRIGERANT
RECOVERY , A/C SYSTEM CHARGING or A/C System Evacuation and recharge the
system See A/C REFRIGERANT RECOVERY , A/C SYSTEM CHARGING or A/C System
Evacuation . Then go to step 7.
4. Do the A/C System Test .
If vent temperature or suction/discharge pressures are not within specifications, diagnose and repair
the A/C system as needed. Then go to step 6.
