FAILED Troubleshooting is incomplete. Check for poor connections or loose terminals between the
transmission range switch and the PCM, then go to step 1 and recheck. If the PCM was updated, substitute a
known-good PCM See PCM REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or PCM UPDATE , and check the OBD
STATUS again.
NOT COMPLETED Repair verification is incomplete. Meet the test condition, and check the OBD STATUS
again.

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot with
the HDS, and review the General Troubleshooting Information See HOW TO
TROUBLESHOOT THE A/T SYSTEM or HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THE FUEL
AND EMISSIONS SYSTEMS .

P1730 Shift Error B
1. ATF check:

1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on).
2. Make sure that the transmission is filled to the proper level, and check for fluid leaks.
3. DRAIN THE ATF through a strainer. Inspect the strainer for metal debris or excessive clutch
material.
Does the strainer have metal debris or excessive clutch material?
YES : Replace the transmission See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY AND
REASSEMBLY or AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , then do
the repair verification .
NO : REPLACE THE ATF , then go to step 2.
2. Problem verification (test-drive):

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
3. Test-drive the vehicle with the shift lever in D, and let the transmission shift through all five
gears.
ο‘
4. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P1730 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

Does the HDS indicate FAILED?
YES : The failure is duplicated. Go to step 3.
NO : If the HDS indicates PASSED, intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the HDS
indicates NOT COMPLETED, test-drive again.
3. Shift solenoid valve A operation check:
ο‘
1. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
ο‘
2. Select Shift Solenoid Valve A in the Miscellaneous Test Menu, and check that shift solenoid
valve A operates with the HDS.
Is a clicking sound heard?
YES : Shift solenoid valve A is OK. Go to step 4.
NO : REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE A , then do the repair verification .
4. Shift solenoid valve B operation check:

1. Select Shift Solenoid Valve B in the Miscellaneous Test Menu, and check that shift solenoid
valve B operates with the HDS.
Is a clicking sound heard?
YES : Shift solenoid valve B is OK. Go to step 5.
NO : REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE B , then do the repair verification .
5. Shift solenoid valve D operation check:

1. Select Shift Solenoid Valve D in the Miscellaneous Test Menu, and check that shift solenoid
valve D operates with the HDS.
Is a clicking sound heard?
YES : Shift solenoid valve D is OK. Go to step 6.
NO : REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE D , then do the repair verification .
6. Problem verification (OBD STATUS check):

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
3. Test-drive the vehicle with the shift lever in D, and let the transmission shift through all five
gears.

4. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P1730 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

YES : The failure is duplicated. Repair the hydraulic system related with shift valves A, B, and D, or
replace the transmission See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY AND
REASSEMBLY or AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , then do
the repair verification .
NO : If the HDS indicates PASSED, intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the HDS
indicates NOT COMPLETED, test-drive again.
REPAIR VERIFICATION (OBD STATUS CHECK)

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
3. Test-drive the vehicle with the shift lever in D, and let the transmission shift through all five gears.
4. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P1730 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

Does the HDS indicate PASSED, FAILED, or NOT COMPLETED?
PASSED Troubleshooting is complete. Check for other DTC after this troubleshooting. If any other Pending or
Confirmed DTCs were indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
FAILED Troubleshooting is incomplete. Go to step 3 and recheck.
NOT COMPLETED Repair verification is incomplete. Meet the test condition, and check the OBD STATUS
again.
